Quotation marks can be tricky. At their most basic, though, they’re very simple.
What you need to know to get started is fairly easy.
Take a look!
Exact words
Place quotation marks around a person’s exact words.
“This is the best trip ever!”
“I cannot wait for lunch.”
It takes two
You cannot use one quotation mark. Why? Because it takes two!
“Come here.”
— not “Come here
— not Come here”
Capitalization matters
When you’re quoting a complete sentence, the first letter is capitalized.
Jonathan said, “Hand that to me, please.”
— not Jonathan said, “hand that to me please.”
