Not every kid celebrates Thanksgiving, but chances are good your kids have no school that day. Keep them busy by asking them to create a newsletter of their activities.
Come Up With a Title
It can be as simple as The Family Times or as complicated as The Amazing Adventures of the Awesome Kids. Whatever it is, have your kids write it in large letters at the top of a piece of paper.
Decide on Subheadings
You may not write them on the page yet, but the subheadings will help them decide on what to write about – and vice versa. Some possibilities are Food! Family Fun! Movies! Snacks! or whatever else your kids will be up to.
Write the Content
Let’s not get too invested in perfect prose. Instead, let them write without corrections and see what they come up with. If they ask for advice, give it to them with leading questions that help them to continue on their own. (Little kids can use stickers or draw!)
Past the Content to the Page
If they write on a postcard, it will be easy to form columns for their writing. Glue the postcard in the appropriate place. How will you know where that is?
Subheadings
Leave space for them or write them in before you paste the content.
Ta Da!
Ask your kids to share their newsletter with the rest of the family.
Bottom Line
Your kids were engaged in a create activity that used their writing skills. They also planned and created their content. That’s a win-win-win situation!
