Before the clock strikes 12 and we’re into a brand new year, why not spend a bit of family time having some family fun with words related to New Year’s Eve?
New
Make a chain story – one person starts and the others take turns continuing – where every adjective (words that describe a noun) is a synonym of new.
Old
Now, switch it up with a chain story where all the adjectives are synonyms of old.
Words-From-Words
If you’ve got young kids, play this game in teams. The little guys can draw pictures or use stickers to illustrate the words the older kids form from a word associated with New Year’s Eve. Some words to get you started are celebration and resolution.
Synonyms
And, while you’ve got everyone’s attention, play a game where teams see how many synonyms (words that mean close to or nuances of a word) of celebration and resolution. To get them started, you can offer “party” for celebration and “intention” for resolution.
Bottom Line
Keep it light, and keep it fun. Your kids will start the year with some new words and happy memories.
