Have you got a middle-grade kid? If you do, we have a book club. This summer, we’ll be doing something a bit different. We’ll be listening to The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, on audiobook while reading along. Why? Because Tolkien wrote this book to be read aloud. I’ve been listening to it myself and am surprised at what a difference it makes – especially the version narrated by Andy Serkis. The club will meet once a week to discuss one to two chapters (I’ll post a schedule). We’ll discuss character development, the hero’s journey, how the author created the world, and more.
We’ll start on Sun, Jun 30th at 7 pm for one hour on Zoom. (There’s a new group starting on Saturday, July 13th.) The club will have twelve-fifteen kids in total – the first twelve to indicate interest. The suggested fee is $5 per meeting, but you can pay what you wish. You will need an audio copy of The Hobbit, as well as a print version – not an e-book since we’ll discuss annotating and passage selection for the written work the kids will do.
